Assembling my cake tasting panel of one...

I like cake. Who doesn't like cake? And what better excuse to go on a cake eating spree than an upcoming birthday?

Well folks, I am turning 30 this year. OMG. This is the year that I'm supposed to get it all together, know where I'm headed in life, bla bla bla. I'm just gonna eat cake.

And celebrate this milestone birthday by having a birthday weekend away with my closest friends. So here we are, on a quest to find the best birthday cake a reasonable amount of money can buy.

I haven't found my cake yet but it has to be chocolate. And rich. A dark, rich, velvety, chocolate mud cake smothered in smooth chocolate cream frosting and ganache.

First stop today - Babka on Brunswick St. We were there for lunch after I got my hair cut. I love the bread and cakes at Babka. And their lemon tart. Jam had the beef, burgundy and mushroom pie, which comes with a chilli chutney, plus a side of rocket salad and two slices of sourdough bread with a wedge of butter. There was only one pie left, so I had a herb omelet on toast. We got a loaf of rye sourdough with caraway to take home and, of course, a slice of Babka's chocolate mud cake.

The mud cake has a dense, moist centre, with a layer of frosting/crust that is almost crunchy, like a biscuit. The top of the crust cracks nicely when I put my spoon through it. The balance of sweetness and chocolaty goodness is tipped slightly over to the sweet side - I would prefer a bit more bitterness to the chocolate. I'm not an expert in what different types of cakes should look like, but this one reminds me a bit of a brownie. It's also quite rich, this is a cake you'd want to savour slowly with a cup of tea or an espresso.

Verdict: Very delicious, though could do with a hint more bitterness and slightly less sweetness. It's the first cake off the rank, and has set a pretty high benchmark. It would be interesting to see how future cakes will stack up. Cake photo to come shortly.
